The court’s interpretation and application of Canada’s Constitution is critical to the function of our democracy and the protection of our basic human rights.
Charter of Rights litigation at the trial and appellate level up to and including the Supreme Court of Canada. Subjects we have addressed include freedom of expression, equality, protection from unreasonable search and seizure, and fair trial requirements (such as the rights to counsel and to trial within a reasonable time) and the right to life, liberty, and security of the person. We have also litigated many issues of the distribution of powers between federal, provincial, and territorial governments.
